“One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple.” Psalm 27:4
Have you ever found yourself in a difficult situation, wishing you only had “this one thing?” David finds himself in a terrible situation: a wicked and powerful enemy is hunting him down. His army is surrounding him and there’s nothing David can do.
So what’s the “one thing” that David desires for this situation?
Communion with God. All David desired in this intense situation was to be in God’s presence, to be focused on how good and faithful God has been to him throughout his life.
The secret of David’s confidence in this horrific situation was his delight in communion with God. David knew that God would show him the path of life, that God’s presence would lead to fullness of joy, and at His right hand are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11).
Friend, where is your confidence?
Everything else in this life will leave us empty! May we not only desire that communion with God, but let us be actively seeking after it. May we be seeking out and trying to secure God’s presence in our lives, knowing that it will make everything in our lives better.
